Eradicate Polio Worldwide

Published by admin at 1:51 pm under ALL LATEST NEWS

As part of Rotary’s “Purple Pinkie” week, to raise funds for the eradication of Polio worldwide. The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside along with the Rotary Club of Stanford Le Hope & Corringham took over the foyer of the Thurrock Civic Centre on Friday 27th February and council staff were invited to donate a pound and have their “Pinkie” (little finger) purpled to signify their donation.
The significance of the “Purple Pinkie” is that it is this method that is used to identify the children who have had their immunisation dose in third world countries. The collection realised in excess of £300 which will be added to the funds raised by Rotary Clubs all over the country who are active in this fund raising venture.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have given Rotary a challenge. They have donated $200 million dollars and have challenged Rotary to match it in three years. Rotarians the world over have been working flat out for the past twenty years to eradicate this terrible disease. There are now only four countries that are still endemic and we hope that this push will finally rid the world of this disease.
