BULPHAN PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSIST IN POLIO APPEAL

Pupils at Bulphan Cof E Primary School invited members of the Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside to their school assembly on Tuesday 21st February to learn about the eradication of polio worldwide.  The school held a non-uniform day in which the pupils wore either purple or pink in support of Rotary’s Eradicate Polio Appeal.  Each pupil contributed money to the appeal and raised a magnificent total of £121.50.
The Rotarians told the school about the battle against polio worldwide, and set up a “mock” clinic to show the children what happens when children overseas are immunised against the disease.  Each pupil was invited to take the medicine (a spoonful of jam) and then had their little finger marked with purple dye to signify that they had been immunised.  It was great fun and the children took on board what we were trying to do.  The assembly closed with the children singing a hymn about the pleasure of giving and President David Fenn presented the school with a club banner as a token of our thanks.

INTO THE “DRAGON’S DEN”

Corringham Thameside were represented at the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy, part of the South Essex College when President David Fenn where the business studies students had to give a “pitch” for their own business at a “Dragon’s Den” held on the campus on Wednesday 25th January.  President David Fenn was one of five “Dragon’s who listened to the pitches then grilled the presenters just like the T.V. show.
The students, all aged seventeen, presented a varied array of “businesses” which included Mobile Beauty Treatments, Event Photography, Selling Music Accessories, Classic Car Renovation, A Student Magazine, A Lottery and two who organised events.
Each presentation was allowed ten minutes for the pitch and questions whilst the “Dragon’s” judged them on the following criteria:-
    a)    Personal presentation
    b)    Confidence
    c)    Finance
    d)    Negotiating skills
    e)    Preparation and answers to questions
    f)    Their overall presentation
    g)    Evidence of extra research
The overall presentations were good, but just like the real thing “The Dragon’s” gave the students a tough time.
David will be returning to the Enterprise Academy on Tuesday 31st January to give his own pitch on the Rotary organisation, and how Rotary can help the students to achieve their charitable goals.  He will also be setting them two challenges with a prize for the most successful.

PANTOMIME TO HELP REECE!

The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside staged the pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk” at the Bowers United Sports and Social Club on Friday 6th January 2012, to raise funds in support of the “Help Reece Walk Campaign”.
Three year old Reece Walker, who requires surgery in the United States to enable him to walk unaided for the first time, was amongst the audience of 190 at the panto which was produced, free of charge, by Chaplin’s Gold Panto’s.
The pantomime raised a magnificent £670 towards the £45,000 Reece’s family need to raise for his surgery.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Chaplin’s Gold Panto’s, the Bowers United Social Club, who allowed us to use their facilities free of charge for the event, and Gateway 97.8 who publicised it for us.
As the parents and children left the hall, they expressed their enjoyment of the evenings entertainment and several of the children expressed their wish that Reece has a successful operation.
The campaign to raise the £45,000 has now passed the halfway stage and Corringham Thameside have so far contributed over £1,000 to the cause. We will be holding a collection at the Eastgate Centre on Saturday 25th February and hope to organise a quiz night in March to add to this total.

WE’RE ALL WILD ABOUT HARRY

Having endured the cold and wind at the Corringham Winter Fayre, where we sold our Corringham Calendar, the Club played host to our friends from the Rotary Club of Wickford. A most enjoyable evening of fellowship included the raffle of two Rotary Christmas Puddings to raise funds for the eradication of polio campaign. One being won by a Wickford member and the other by Corringham member.
After dinner, all those present were entertained by 13 year old Harry Carnaby – Basildon’s Young Volunteer of the year. Harry told those present about his work with Gateway 97.8 where he presents a programme, his work with making T.V. adverts and taking part in various T.V. programmes. He is currently producing his school pantomine. After this he offered up a short general knowledge quiz and followed by singing a couple of songs which included “White Christmas”. All the rotarians present found it difficult to grasp that this was a 13 year old local boy, who has certainly crammed an awful lot into his young life, including an enormous amount of fundraising and support for various charities. Here is a young man who is a credit to himself and those around him, and it is great to see that there are some really motivated young people in our midst who are willing to work for others.
