This year’s “Give-A-Can” collection was held on Saturday 5th December at Morrison’s store in Corringham. It was our first time working with Morrison’s, and the support we received could not have been better.
The rotarians, working in shifts, asked shoppers to donate a can of food which would be donated to the homeless and needy by the Salvation Army. The response could hardly have been better. The number of cans donated was 1678, that was over 10% up on last year’s total and a new record for the collection.
The club would like to place on record their sincere thanks to all the members of the public who gave so generously in these hard times. We would also like to thank the management and staff of Morrison’s without whose help the event could not have taken place. And last but by no means least we would like to thank the Salvation Army for taking charge of the donated cans and ensuring that they go to those who have hit hard times in this festive season.
In addition to the “Give-A-Can” appeal, the club made a street collection in Corringham town centre in aid of Rotary charities which raised a creditable £316.34. We would like to thank all those who gave so generously to support the work of Rotary in our community.

This year’s “Give-A-Can” appeal was an outstanding success.
As customers arrived at the Somerfield’s store in Corringham they were greeted by a Rotarian who would hand them their basket and ask them to donate a can of food for the homeless. As they left the store they would hand their donation to other Rotarians who of course thanked them.
The store did their bit by making in store announcements and had even made display stacks of tins with Give-A-Can point of sale material. We were rewarded by collecting a massive 1528 cans which were handed over to the Salvation Army for distribution. So successful was the day, that the Salvation Army van was only just able to cope with the load.
The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside would like to place on record their sincere thanks to all those who so generously contributed. We would also like to thank the management and staff of the Somerfield’s store whose efforts and co-operation made the event so successful. We would also like to thank the Salvation Army for undertaking the task of ensuring that the goods reach those in most need of them this Christmas.

On Saturday the 8th December, outside Somerfield at Corringham, we collected 1419 cans & packets of food.
We had tremendous support from both the public and the staff at Somerfield. Cans of beans, soup, meat, veg & tins of luxury biscuits were just some of the items donated. Thanks to the generosity of shoppers donating their extra cans of food the needy of the Thurrock area will be supplied these donations, via the Salvation Army, over Christmas and into the New Year. Somerfield very kindly made a donation of cans and also supplied the boxes for storage, transportation of all those cans !!
A BIG THANK YOU to those that helped and/or donated. Thank you !!
