The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside

Over 100 people attended the joint event organised by the Club and Inner Wheel. The quiz was organised to support the “Help Reece Walk” campaign and was held at Orsett Village Hall on Saturday 14th April.

The questions were set by David and Magda Norris who tested the teams on a wide range of subjects. The winning team all received a bottle of wine for their efforts, and a good time was had by all.

Three year old local boy Reece Walker is currently in the USA recovering from the operation that will enable him to walk unaided for the first time. The operation appears to have been a success, with the medical teamat the St Louis Children’s Hospital forecasting that Reece will not only be able to walk but will be able to take part in sports.

To enable Reece to be able to have the surgery, his family had to raise £45,000 in just 6 months, and we are proud to have been part of this fund raising effort. We would like to place on record our thanks to all those who have helped us raise funds for this appeal. The quiz raised a further £800  for the cause.

We are pleased to announce that the winner of our recent Prize Music Quiz is Sandra Jones of Woodbridge in Suffolk, who takes home the £25 prize. Sandra’s entry was just one of eight all correct entries received and as a result, the winners name was drawn from the hat.

The Quiz, covering cryptic clues to the names of 50 musicians, groups and singers, covered different era’s and a number of different musical genres.

The quiz was organised to support the “Help Reece Walk” appeal which is now nearing its £45,000 target. We would like to thank all those who entered the competition.

In the District Cribbage competition, Corringham Thameside (represented by Eric Stanbury and David Fenn) played the Rotary Club of Wickford in the first round. The tie was played on Monday 7th November 2011.
Corringham went into a two leg lead after the first of the singles leaving Wickford with the task of winning all the remaining ties in the rubber. David Fenn was soundly beaten by his oponent, losing 2-0, and Eric followed suit, going down 2-1 in a closely fought leg. To reach this stage, we had been playing for nearly three and a half hours, which meant that there was no time left to play the deciding tie. Our oponents, Wickford, very sportingly suggested that we should decide the tie on a simple cut of the cards. Eric cut first and turned up a nine. Not bad but certainly not unbeatable. Richard cut for Wickford and luckily for us it was just a seven.
We would like to play tribute to the sportsmanship of our oponents, who both wished us the best of luck in the next round.

We had an excellent turn out for our “Like A Millionaire” Quiz (24.11.07) – Over a hundred people making up 14 teams took part !! Amid the quizical looks and much scratching of heads we raised  a huge £485.00 with an additional £20.56 collected towards the “Mile of 2p coins”. The winning team were the “Wino’s “, who ironically, won a case of wine !! We would like to thank all those who attended, donated items for the raffle, and assisted in the running & organisation of this quiz. Thankyou.

On Saturday 24th November, at Homesteads Village Hall, The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside are hosting a Quiz – Who Wants To Be ‘Like’ A Millionaire – 7.30pm for a prompt 7.45pm start with teams of up to 8 people.
All are welcome and tickets are £5.00 each inclusive of a ploughmans lunch – just bring your own drinks, a sense of humour but no encylopedias !
All the proceeds will be going towards our Trailwalker charity event next year in July – which in itself raising money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust and Oxfam.
