Hi, I’m David, the oldest of the club’s Trailwalker team. Mindful of the fact that it is nearly 8 years since I have done any serious walking, it is essential that I get in plenty of practice.
I started my training back in August, with regular 5 mile walks completed as fast as I could manage. 5 miles would have taken about 67 minutes. Since then, I have increased the distance considerably, but maintain a steady 4 1/2 miles per hour.
I have regularly joined Terry & Rob for group training sessions which usually take in routes around One Tree Hill and Langdon Hills and we sometimes walk across the marshes from Fobbing to Mucking and back.
Currently I am training 2 or 3 times a week and hope to complete between 10 to 15 miles on each occasion. I have twice made it from Basildon to Southend and back – a distance of approx. 28 miles !!
Since the beginning of August I have completed some 575 miles, but I’m aware that the real work starts in the new year. Training so far has accounted for more than 1.2 million paces.

On Saturday the 8th December, outside Somerfield at Corringham, we collected 1419 cans & packets of food.
We had tremendous support from both the public and the staff at Somerfield. Cans of beans, soup, meat, veg & tins of luxury biscuits were just some of the items donated. Thanks to the generosity of shoppers donating their extra cans of food the needy of the Thurrock area will be supplied these donations, via the Salvation Army, over Christmas and into the New Year. Somerfield very kindly made a donation of cans and also supplied the boxes for storage, transportation of all those cans !!
A BIG THANK YOU to those that helped and/or donated. Thank you !!

Following several discussions with the Headteacher & Deputy Head of Hassenbrook School, The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside hopes to be able to form an Interact Club at Hassenbrook.Interact is the junior form of Rotary and is for young people between 14 and 18 years of age. Interactors organise their own programme under the guidance of both the school & the Rotary Club. They are expected to be involved in a minimum of 1 project in the local community and another internationally. Our club & Hassenbrook School recognise the fact that our young people are the citizens of the future and should therefore be an active part of the community.
