Although they were beaten by 8 points, the Corringham team gave a good account of themselves, and actually won more ends than their opponents. Unfortunately, our team only managed to score single points on the ends they won whilst Frinton picked up multiples to secure a well earned win. We offer our opponents our heartfelt congratulations on their success. The club would also like to congratulate Brian and Frank on their achievements in this competition. Well done!

From this picture does anyone else think Brian looks like Carmen Miranda?

Like knights of old, the rotarians of Corringham Thameside were both blod and chivalrous at their medieval banquet
held on Saturday 7th March at Barnard’s Farm in West Horndon. Nearly seventy Rotarians, together with their families and friends, all suitably attired in a variety of costumes of the period, enjoyed a three course meal which included a hog roast. The meal was suitably washed down with some fine English ale and wine.
The evening was hosted by President Terry Finnegan, who acted as Lord of the Manor and discipline was imposed by his faithful Sheriff, David of Basildon. Several miscreants found themselves in the village stocks for such
diverse crimes as non-payment of taxes, monks who had defied their laws of celibacy, a councillor who thought he was immune from prosecution on the grounds that he was a politician, and serving wenches that displayed little cleavage. There were tournament games, including a form of jousting which required contestants to ride a “hobby horse” whilst carrying a shield and weilding a floppy lance.
This and other games ensured that those present were kept frollicking the night away.
The fifteenth century Welsh barn was decked out with heraldic banners made by club members to add to the atmosphere.
The evening was in support of Prostrate Cancer Research and it is hoped that the profits will reach over £400.

As part of Rotary’s “Purple Pinkie” week, to raise funds for the eradication of Polio worldwide. The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside along with the Rotary Club of Stanford Le Hope & Corringham took over the foyer of the Thurrock Civic Centre on Friday 27th February and council staff were invited to donate a pound and have their “Pinkie” (little finger) purpled to signify their donation.
The significance of the “Purple Pinkie” is that it is this method that is used to identify the children who have had their immunisation dose in third world countries. The collection realised in excess of £300 which will be added to the funds raised by Rotary Clubs all over the country who are active in this fund raising venture.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have given Rotary a challenge. They have donated $200 million dollars and have challenged Rotary to match it in three years. Rotarians the world over have been working flat out for the past twenty years to eradicate this terrible disease. There are now only four countries that are still endemic and we hope that this push will finally rid the world of this disease.
