District Governor John Banks Visits Club

Published by admin under ALL LATEST NEWS

On Thursday 8th October the club welcomed District Governor John Banks and his wife Maureen, who were making the annual D.G’s visit.
In his address to the club, D.G. John emphasised this year’s slogan “The future of Rotary is in your hands” pointing out it was the duty of every Rotarian to introduce a new member and to carry on with the charity work we all do. He told the members about his training visit to San Diego in January and the inspiration he felt in meeting District Governors from all over the world.
He congratulated the club on their achievements, highlighting our Give-A-Can appeal, the fishing day for handicapped and special needs children, our work with the local schools, our support for the Hooghly Eye Clinic in India as well as our involvement with the community radio station.
He told the members that this year’s “Purple Pinkie” week should be the biggest yet, and he set thechallenge for District 1240 to raise a minimum of £100,000. Corringham Thameside are busily collecting their President’s weight in coin for this appeal, and have so far reached just over 15 kilos. We will be holding a street collection in Corringham during the week commencing 22nd February to add to this, and we will be inviting local schools to support the cause.
The Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside wishes District Governor John all the best for his year in office and will do all they can to help him reach his target.

Our Club’s Own Radio Show Prepares For It’s 6th Series

Published by admin under ALL LATEST NEWS, Gateway to Jazz

I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to have withdrawal symptons since “Gateway to Jazz” went off air in July.  But don’t despair, I’ve just started preparing the next series which will go live for four weeks commencing Wednesday 2nd December at 7 p.m.

I’ll be introducing a number of new features as well as highlighting the bands you can hear at local jazz venue’s, I’ve included a spot for jazz versions of negro spirituals and there will be a spot to highlight jazz from overseas with bands from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, France and as far away as Australia.  I will be arranging a number of interviews with people associated with the local jazz scene, including both musicians and promotors. If you’ve ever wondered what was in the hit parade from 1927 onwards, I’ve even included a spot to highlight that.

You will be surprised what great music made up the charts so long ago, and it was jazz. Remember to tune in on 87.7 fm on Wednesday evenings from 7p.m. until 9 p.m. to hear the very best of red hot music that is jazz, brought to you by the Rotary Club of Corringham Thameside and introduced by yours truly David Fenn.

Join me then.
