Thanks For Life – End Polio Now
The 2000 crocus bulbs we planted in the autumn are just beginning to break into flower to brighten the long dark winter’s days and herald the approach of Spring. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday 24th,25th and 26th February the club was out in Corringham Town centre to raise funds for the eradication of polio worldwide. Any one who donated, was invited to plant a summer bulb in the trays provided and these will be transplanted into the garden built by the club at Corringham Primary School. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us on Saturday, which kept the shoppers away and therefore the result was disappointing.
Despite this, we managed to collect sufficient funds to immunise more than 1500 children against this terrible disease.
The Club would like to thank all those who donated to this cause.
Rotary has been involved in this campaign since 1985 and more than $800,000,000 has been raised by Rotarians around the world. In 2008, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation challenged Rotary to raise $200,000,000 within three years and they will double it. With four months to go we are confident we will be successful. Polio is now only endemic in four countries, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. We hope in the next few years we can rid the planet of this terrible disease.
