The club held a fund-raising Quiz Night at The East Thurrock Community Association’s Hall on Friday 11th March 2011 in aid of Rotary charities.
A packed hall of eighty family and friends battled out a very close and keenly fought competition. Question master Terry Finnegan, tested their general knowledge with questions of a wide range of subjects, cunningly disguised to confuse the teams. All of the questions were multi-choice answers which at least gave the contestants a one in four chance of obtaining the correct answer. In the end only three points covered the top three teams.
Our thanks go to all those who supported us and to the Rotarians and friends who gave of their time to organise the event which raised in excess of four hundred pounds.

South Basildon and East Thurrock’s Member of Parliament, Stephen Metcalf visited the club on Thursday 3rd March. He was welcomed by Club President David Fenn who introduced him to each member in turn. He spoke to the club about his job and his experiences as a newly elected Member of Parliament. It was quite surprising how much he was expected to learn in such a short space of time. He explained that he had the honour to ask the very first question in the new Parliament. Despite having been warned by more experienced politicians that this was a daunting task. He explained how nervous he was as his opportunity was immediately prior to Prime Ministers questions, so the House was packed.
The talk was most interesting and the club members had the opportunity to ask questions, which ranged from Why did M.P.’s continually stand and sit at question times, What were his views on A.V. and where did he stand on Referenda. He answered all the questions with clarity. Rotarian Clive Yallop remarked that he had recently received a letter from Mr Metcalf and appreciated the prompt and articulate reply. The letter was handwritten.
Rotarian Frank Price propsed the vote of thanks.
In talking to the President about the club’s programme which includes a joke and bad taste tie evening to remember past friends who had died in service, Mr Metcalf promised to donate a tie which will be auctioned to raise funds for bowel cancer research.
The club would like to thank Stephen Metcalf for finding the time to speak to us. He had to stay at the House of Commons until 7.30 p.m. and then travel bsck to visit us. We much appreciate his efforts.
