Corringham Thameside’s bowling team progressed through to the next round of the District 1240 Bowls competition with a win over local rivals Grays. Having beaten their “B” side in the previous round it was the “A” team next. Corringham’s team made up of Clive Yallop, David Fenn and Brian Price took an early lead which grew to an impressive 13-0 after eight ends, but Grays stuck to their task and fought back bravely to reduce the deficit to 20-13 as we entered the final end. Faced with a near impossible task, the Grays bowlers refused to give up, but Corringham were able to restrict them to just 2 points allowing us to progress through to the latter stages of the competition. It was a most enjoyable game, played in a relaxed and friendly manner. Accepting their defeat in a sportsmanlike fashion, the Grays players wished us all the best for the remainder of the competition. We thank them for their friendship.

The club held another successful Quiz night to raise funds for our charitable work at East Thurrocks Community Hall on Friday 16th June. Considering the number of people on holiday we were pleased with the support of over 60 people.
President, David Fenn acted as Quizmaster and set questions on such diverse subjects as Pot Luck, Just Williams, Cartoons, A Question of Faith, Lawmakers, Crime and detection, Royalty, Tweets and Twitters, Nicknames and From source to sea. There was also a marathon section where teams had to identify 25 national flags.
Surprising as it seems, the winning team actually scored a hundred per cent. The first time that has happened in a Club Quiz. Well done to them. But let’s not forget the other teams who all scored above 60%.
The evening was enjoyed by all and raised a significant ammount of cash for our work. Thanks to everyone who supported us.

It seems amazing that the club has just had its 30th Club Assembly and two of our founder members, Bernie Purver and Peter Burfoot are still actively involved in the club.
Club Assembly is when the club declares its intentions for the coming Rotary year to the Area Assistant Governor, Peter Dowse.
President, David Fenn outlined his vision for the club and set the various committee’s a number of challenges. For the Club Administration team, he asked for a full and interesting club programme, including events that would include families and friends. We will continue our club bulletin, which keeps members up to date with what’s going on and we will forge closer links with other clubs.
The Membership committee were charged with formulating a vigorous and effective recruitment campaign with a target of a minimum of two new members this year.
Projects and Fund-raising team will endeavour to plan and finance tw new projects one in our local community and the other international, in addition to those already in our calendar like Dictionaries for Life, Fishing Day for handicapped children and Give-A-Can. Already feasability studies are in progress to launch our own “Colouful Corringham” Calendar and a Junior School Choir Competition in the area.
The club will again support the “Thanks for Life” Polio eradication project and will organise a fund-raising event for the Rotary Foundation.
It is an ambitious programme, but one we will work hard to achieve.

Corringham Thameside scored an impressive double in the District 1240 Summer Sports Competitions on Tuesday 31st May 2011. Firstly, their bowls team of Brian Price, Clive Yallop and David Fenn travelled to Aveley to compete with Grays Rotary Club in the bowls competition. The Corringham team started extremely well and built up a commanding 19-0 lead, before Grays managed to get onto the scoreboard. The final score was 26-3 to Corringham.
Later the same evening they competed in the Hugh Markham trophy against the rotary club of Romford. This was to be a game of boule, and Corringham Thameside were represented by Brian Price, Clive Yallop, John Cooper and David Fenn. Brian and Clive won their match after coming from behind, but David and John went down to a comprehensive defeat. The decider was competed by Brian and Clive who quickly fell behind before rallying to enter the final end trailing 9-8. Either side could win the tie on this end, Romford needing a solitary point whilst Corringham two. It was really tense, with little to choose between the two teams. On the final throw, Romford were unable to dislodge the Corringham boules, leaving Corringham with the cherished two points and an unlikely win.
Both matches were played in the expected sporting attitudes, and we would like to thank our opponents for their part in two most enjoyable games. Once again fellowship was the overall winner, which is what these competitions are about. We look forward to the next rounds of the competition.
